How we measure and verify WhatsApp groups

WhatsApp Groups does not just list links. It checks that every invite works, measures how many messages monitored groups exchange per day, and uses that data to order lists and rankings. This page explains each measurement.

How do we verify that a group link still works?

Every published invite link is opened and checked in continuous cycles, with priority for the most visited groups. The check confirms that the invite resolves to a real group, that the group accepts new members, and that its content matches the category. A link that fails is taken down.

Each group page shows the date of its last verification. Groups that change their invite, fill up or are closed disappear from the lists until a new link is submitted and approved. Temporary WhatsApp errors do not remove a group right away: the link goes back into a recheck queue before any decision is made.

How do we know how many messages a group sends per day?

For monitored groups, an account owned by the directory joins the group and records the messages exchanged. Every 30 minutes the day's message total and the number of members who wrote are recomputed and published on the group card. As of September 2, 2026, 138 groups had this measurement active.

Measurement is continuous, not a one-time sample. A group that was active and went quiet shows low numbers within days, and a group that grew moves up the rankings without anyone editing anything. Groups that remove the directory account lose the measurement and leave the activity lists.

What is an active member?

An active member is a participant who sent at least one message in the measured period. It differs from the total participant count: a group can have 900 people and only 12 active members per day. That is why the card shows both numbers side by side, and activity rankings use active members.

How are group rankings computed?

Rankings combine three metrics and three periods. The metrics are visits to the group page on the directory, messages sent, and active members. The periods are day, week and month. Each combination produces its own list, and all of them are recomputed automatically from measured data.

  • Visits count views of the group page on this site, across all published groups.
  • Messages and active members consider only monitored groups, because they are the only ones with direct measurement.
  • Position in the lists comes from measured numbers, recent verification and relevance to the category.

Rankings live at WhatsApp group rankings. The Groups active now and Groups active today lists use the same measurement over shorter windows.

How does a group get into the directory?

Every submitted group goes through manual review before publication. The team checks that the topic is clear, that members actually talk to each other, that moderation exists with visible rules, and that the image and description represent the group. Approved groups join one of 74 categories and 306 subcategories.

The full criteria, and what to do when a group is not approved, are in How to get your group featured.

What these numbers do not tell you

Message measurement covers only monitored groups, not all 11,443 published ones. A group without activity numbers is not necessarily inactive: it simply does not have the directory account inside. Visits measure interest on the site, not conversation in the group. And no metric judges the quality of what is said, only the volume.
